When Using YouTube to Promote Your Business is Appropriate

In a recent interview, I was asked my opinion on YouTube and how it affected my view of the Web. My answer was simple. “YouTube did more for video on the Web than any other company. It created a culture for video on the Web that has changed everything.”

Should your business use YouTube to promote your products and services? The answer is “Yes, Yes, Yes!”

Smart marketers use YouTube to drive traffic to their websites and so should every business with a web presence. The emphasis, however, is to use YouTube to drive traffic to your website - not away from it. You should never make the mistake of embedding YouTube video on your website. Let’s not forget the YouTube logo that’s embedded in every YouTube video. That logo makes the YouTube website just a click away.

The simple truth is we all have attention deficit on the Web. We are constantly bombarded with opportunities to move from site to site. When someone clicks on the YouTube logo, they move away from your site without becoming a customer and they are delivered to a YouTube page displaying the videos of businesses you compete with.

We all work very hard and use expensive resources to drive traffic to our websites. We should do everything we can to keep traffic on our sites as long as possible until we reach our primary goal - converting traffic to customers.
